With a quarter of US CLOs failing their OC tests there has been plenty of talk about the impact of test-failures, but very little talk about what portfolio management steps a manager can take to fix the problem. As loan-market prices stabilize some test will cure themselves, but other like CCC-buckets will require active steps, complicated by the wide range of other matrices and metrics that need to also be fulfilled.

Serhan Secmen is a Partner and Portfolio Manager of the CLO Investments Strategy at Napier Park Global Capital (“Napier Park”). Napier Park separated from Citigroup’s alternative investment arm, Citi Capital Advisors (“CCA”), in February 2013. Prior to joining Citi Capital Advisors in August 2008, Serhan was a CLO trader at Lehman Brothers. Prior to his post at Lehman Brothers, he spent several years in Texas as a project manager focusing on special project financing. During his tenure at Napier Park, Serhan has assisted in the development of multiple propriety analytics systems and has been influential in the various strategies and methodologies for analyzing CLOs and other structured products. Since 2006, Serhan has also been involved in various industry forums and networks, including the investor roundtables for Moody's, S&P, and Fitch Ratings. He frequently appears as a speaker at multiple industry conferences and panels. Serhan holds an MBA degree from Wharton School of Business, an MS degree from Texas A&M University, and a BS degree from Bogazici University in Turkey.
Maggie Wang is a Managing Director and the Head of US CLO & CDO Strategy at Citigroup. She advises over 200 global intuitional investors on their CLO investment. With over a decade of research experience in the CLO market, Maggie aims to put out thoughtful and insightful research that focuses on relative value and fundamentals.
Maggie and her team have been ranked among the top in the All-America Institutional Investor Fixed Income Research Survey since 2007. She is also ranked as the second most helpful CLO analyst in Greenwich Survey in 2015, 2016 and 2017. Prior to joining Citi in 2014, Maggie headed the US CLO & CDO research at JPMorgan.
Maggie has a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering and was a Ph.D. candidate at Boston University where she earned a Master’s degree in Computer System Engineering.
Jim Wiant is the Senior Portfolio Manager for the MidOcean CLO strategy. In addition, Jim is a Portfolio Manager for certain customized opportunistic credit strategies. He is also a member of the Firm’s Investment Committee, Risk Committee and ESG Committee.
Jim has 22 years of experience in corporate credit investing and mergers and acquisitions. Prior to joining MidOcean Credit Partners as a founder at its inception in 2009, Mr. Wiant was a Senior Vice President at Deerfield Capital Management LLC. At Deerfield, Mr. Wiant helped to build and manage Deerfield’s alternative credit investment portfolio and was responsible for deal origination, diligence and portfolio management of both senior secured and unsecured debt investments. Prior to joining Deerfield, Mr. Wiant spent three years as a Vice President at Golub Capital where he was responsible for originating and underwriting debt investments. Before business school, Mr. Wiant was an Associate in the Executive Office for Deutsche Bank Americas focusing on mergers and acquisitions and corporate strategy and an Analyst in the Mergers and Acquisitions Group at Salomon Smith Barney. He graduated magna cum laude from the Georgetown School of Business in 1996 with a B.S. in Finance and Accounting and received an MBA with honors with a concentration in Finance and Strategic Management from The Wharton School in 2002.
