LPs’ perspective: Building sustainable investments into your portfolio
Energy transition is an inevitable trend this decade and one that will only be expedited in a post-COVID world. According to the 2020 EMPEA Global LP survey, most LPs are now taking climate change and other environmental factors into account when making investment decisions. In response to these changes, an increasing number of LPs are shifting their allocations from conventional energy to renewables and investing in themes such as electrification of transportation and carbon tracking. Our panel of global LPs discuss where they see the opportunities in Asia, and how they are constructing their portfolios to prepare for the era of energy transition.

Sunil is a business leader with global experience in renewable energy, new energy and digital technologies. He has more than two decades of experience with disruptive solutions and business models in semiconductors, electronics, Internet and energy.
Sunil has been involved in the renewable energy industry for more than a decade. Sunil developed renewable energy strategy at Sembcorp Industries in 2015 and grew the business to 2,600MW across five countries by end of 2018. In 2019, he transitioned to Vena Energy, which is operating and developing renewable energy assets in Asia Pacific. Current focus countries are Japan, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand and India.
Prior to his current role Sunil was global head of cleantech banking at Standard Chartered and global head of technology and global cleantech research at Morgan Stanley. During his term, Sunil steered these institutions to win many prestigious industry awards. He has had a firsthand experience of participating in the emergence of cleantech companies in Asia, Europe and the US. Over last 15 years he has led numerous capital markets, project financing and structured credit solutions for Cleantech and renewable companies in multiple regulatory and financial markets. Sunil has extensively engaged with regulators for structuring and formulating renewable energy policies.
Sunil earned B.Tech in Electrical Engineering from Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi and MBA from Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad, both in India.

Anthony Muh is a Senior Partner of H.R.L. Morrison & Co, a specialist investment manager and operator of infrastructure assets. An investment professional with more than 30 years of experience in both traditional and alternative investments. He is responsible for expanding Morrison & Co’s infrastructure investment capabilities outside of its core markets of Australia/New Zealand.
Mr. Muh previously spent over a decade with Citigroup Global Asset Management and Salomon Brothers Asset Management as regional Chief Investment officer. He was a member of its global asset management committee. Mr. Muh also previously headed up the proprietary investment activities in Asia Pacific of Alliance Trust PLC.
Mr. Muh is a Non Executive Director of London listed Utilico Emerging Markets Trust plc, a specialist emerging market infrastructure investment company and was also a former Board of Director of Infratil, a NZ/Australia listed infrastructure company. Mr. Muh is the current Chairman of Asian Corporate Governance Association and an Advisory Board member of Euromoney Institutional Investor Plc. He is a past Chairman and Fellow of Hong Kong Securities and Investments Institute and a past Chairman and Fellow of New Zealand Society of Investment Analyst (now known as INFINZ).

John (“J.B.”) Oldenburg is a Principal with the Renewable and Sustainable Energy Fund. He is based in New York.
Prior to joining the RSEF team, Mr. Oldenburg spent more than six years with the Carlyle Power Partners team in New York.
Since joining Carlyle in 2013, Mr. Oldenburg has been involved with Carlyle’s investments across the power space, including Valcour Wind Energy, Revere Power, Southeast PowerGen, RISEC, CalPeak, Midway, Malaga Peaking and Red Oak. Mr. Oldenburg serves on the boards of Valcour Wind Energy, Revere Power and Southeast PowerGen.
Prior to joining Carlyle, Mr. Oldenburg was an Associate at Bregal Energy, focusing on investments in renewable and traditional power generation development, electric transmission, and oil and gas exploration and production. Prior to Bregal Energy, Mr. Oldenburg worked as an Analyst at UBS Investment Bank in the Global Power and Utilities Group.
Mr. Oldenburg received a BS in commerce with a concentration in finance from the McIntire School of Commerce at University of Virginia.

Charlie Reid, Managing Director, joined BlackRock in 2011 and is a founding member of BlackRock Renewable Power and BlackRock Infrastructure. Charlie is the Head of Asia Pacific for BlackRock Renewable Power and is responsible for sourcing, executing and managing renewable power and climate infrastructure investments across the APAC region. Charlie has played a leading role in building BlackRock Renewable Power into a c.$5bn global platform, in establishing the $2.2bn Renewable Income platform and has invested in over 100 renewable infrastructure assets across a range of markets.
Prior to joining BlackRock, Charlie worked in corporate and energy finance for NTR plc, the Clinton Foundation, Lazard and Goldman Sachs. Charlie earned an MA in Modern Languages from the University of Oxford with first class honours.

Adolfo Dindo Abueg – Managing Director and Co Head of Asia Pacific Project Finance, Korea Development Bank (KDB): Dindo Abueg is a senior banker with about 25 year background in Project and Structured Financing business. He is currently based in Singapore and is responsible for building the Project Finance franchise of KDB in overseas markets. Prior to KDB, he was with Natixis as Director for Structured Export Finance for South and South East Asia and with WestLB as Director for the Energy and Infrastructure group. He also worked with Deutsche Bank and BNP Paribas in various roles as a Financial Adviser or Lead MLA. Dindo started his career with Gas Ventures Advisers, a British Gas subsidiary involved in the development of power plants and other gas-related infrastructure projects. Adolfo has a Master’s in Public and Private Management from Yale University, USA.

Dr. Bo Bai is the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Asia Green Fund (AGF). AGF, through its controlled subsidiary with private equity management license in P.R.China, currently manages U.S.-China Green Fund I. Dr. Bai is also the Chairman of East Low Carbon, and director of Capital Heating, Four Rivers Fund Management, Huitongda, Low Carbon Environment, and AIPark. Meanwhile, Dr. Bai is a member of the investment committee of Science and Technology Achievements Transformation Fund of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Three Gorges Green Fund, and Jiangsu Jiequan Emerging Industry Development Fund.
AGF is an emerging impact private equity firm focusing on China’s Industrials and Business Service (IBS) Sectors. AGF currently directly and co-manages ¥15bn (~$2bn) AUM in China. Dr. Bai has 15 years of experience in investment management, including equity investment, cross-border mergers and acquisitions, as well as non-performing asset reorganization. He has accumulated trading experience and profound industrial resources across different markets. From 2009-2016, Dr. Bai worked for Warburg Pincus. As a Partner and Managing Director, he led its investments in the energy, industrial and business service sectors in Asia. During the time at Warburg Pincus, Dr. Bai was in charge of several Chinese investment projects including Baosteel Gas, AAG Energy, and Huacheng Gas, as well as the investment management of multiple US companies such as Laredo Petroleum, MEG Energy, and Omega Energia. In addition, he also completed the disposal of non-performing assets such as Taishan Petrochemical and Sunnywell.
Previously, he worked at First Reserve Corporation and Goldman Sachs New York.Dr. Bai holds a B.S. and an M.S. in Physics from the University of Science and Technology of China, a certificate from the Sloan School of Management at MIT in the Financial Technology Option and a Ph.D. in Physics from MIT.

Paul joined Pacific Equity Partners in 2017. Prior to joining PEP Paul was Head of Infrastructure, Australia & New Zealand, at AMP Capital where he was responsible for leading the investment activities of the firm's Australia and New Zealand infrastructure teams. Paul has 24 years of principal investment experience, spanning sectors including airports, toll roads, rail, energy utilities, water, health and education. Paul received a Master of Arts in International Relations from the University of New South Wales and a Bachelor of Commerce (with merit) from the University of Wollongong.

Monique Miller is an Executive Director in the Investment Team at the Clean Energy Finance Corporation and co-leads the large-scale solar business platform. Monique has over 15 years’ experience in clean energy and environmental finance. Monique’s team at CEFC has provided debt finance to over 1 Gigawatt of large scale solar projects throughout Australia over the past several years. Monique joined CEFC at its inception in 2013 and previously worked in Macquarie Bank’s Environmental Financial Products team in London and Sydney, trading environmental commodities and investing in clean energy projects on bank balance sheet. Prior to this, Monique was a lawyer in Baker & McKenzie’s Climate Change and Environmental Finance division. Monique holds a Bachelor of Arts/Law degree with Honours from the Australian National University and is a Graduate Member of the Australian Institute of Company Directors.

Geoffrey Tan is a Managing Director at U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (DFC). As DFC’s representative based in Singapore, he is responsible for business development in Malaysia, the Philippines and the Pacific as well as overall coordination across DFC’s Bangkok, Jakarta and Mumbai offices. Mr. Tan has worked in emerging markets investment financing for over 20 years. Since joining Overseas Private Investment Corporation (OPIC) – now DFC - in 2003, he has worked primarily on power, renewable energy and infrastructure projects, but has also diversified into financial institutions transactions. These have been across Latin America, the Middle East, Central and Eastern Europe, Africa and Asia. Prior to OPIC Mr. Tan worked for the Chase Manhattan Bank (now JPMorgan Chase) in New York, Singapore and Hong Kong focusing on project and structured finance, and for Emerging Markets Partnership in Singapore focusing on private equity infrastructure investments. Mr. Tan is a graduate of Cornell University and the University of Virginia, and attended Université Catholique de Louvain in Belgium.

Jason heads Energy, Infrastructure and Projects in Singapore. He specialises in project development, project financing, acquisition financing and M&A, matters in the power (including renewables), oil & gas, petrochemical, infrastructure and telecoms sectors across Asia Pacific.

Bruce Crane leads Ontario Teachers’ infrastructure investing activities across Asia-Pacific and currently serves on the boards of Sydney Desalination Plant, Equis Development and India’s National Investment and Infrastructure Fund. Bruce joined Ontario Teachers’ in 2020 as one of the initial members of its new Singapore office, its 2nd in Asia after the Hong Kong office.
Prior to joining Ontario Teachers’, Bruce spent nearly 10 years at OMERS Infrastructure where he most recently led their investing efforts in Asia. Previously, he was based in New York where he focused on North & South America transport and energy related investments. While at OMERS, he served on Boards at Midland Cogeneration Ventures, Chicago Skyway, GNLQ Regas (Chile) and IndInfravit Tollroads (India). Prior to that, Bruce worked in Investment Banking at UBS (NYC) and Morgan Stanley (Houston) and earlier as a Field Engineer for Foster Wheeler (global).
Bruce holds a BS in Civil Engineering from Lehigh University and an MBA from the Columbia Business School.

Del was appointed Head of External Investments & Partnerships (EIP) in 2017. In this role Del is responsible for overseeing the development of the team’s portfolio, strategy, and implementation plan. The portfolio is very broad, covering both private and public markets globally. She sits on the Investment Committee. Del joined the Guardians in 2011 as a Portfolio Manager in the EIP team. As a Portfolio Manager, Del actively managed relevant investments in the portfolio, oversaw the appointment and monitoring of external investment managers, and led the development of the Fund’s strategic partnerships programme.
Prior to joining the Guardians, Del was a Client Service Manager for Russell Investments, where she was responsible for all aspects of the institutional client relationships in New Zealand. Del also spent 5 years in London working as a Risk Manager for Pictet Asset Management, where she was involved in the establishment of a risk management function. She has worked in a variety of roles in the financial services industry over the past 25 years.
Del holds a Bachelor of Management Studies (First Class Honours) degree from the University of Waikato. She completed the Investment Management Programme at the London Business School in 2004. During 2018 Del participated in the Global Women Breakthrough Leaders programme.

Nicole Goh joined GIC Infrastructure in 2008. As Head, Infrastructure Asia ex-China, she has investment coverage responsibility for opportunities in the Asia-Pacific region, with prior experience investing in the US and Europe. She represents GIC Infrastructure on the boards of its portfolio companies in the region.
Nicole has a BSc in Mathematics with Statistics for Finance from Imperial College London, and an MSc in Management Science and Engineering from Stanford University.

Isabel is the Regional Industry Director, Infrastructure Natural Resources, Asia Pacific, based in Singapore. For seven years prior to her current role, Isabel was the Regional Manager for PPP, initially for South Asia based in Delhi, and subsequently in Singapore as her mandate expanded to cover APAC for the last four years. Isabel spent four years in IFC’s Subnational Finance unit where she worked in deal origination, structuring and supervision of debt and structured finance products in more than six countries in LAC. Prior joining IFC, Isabel held various positions in WBG operations in the urban sector in the Middle East and North Africa region, the water sector in Latin America, and the transport, power and urban sector in South Asia. Prior joining WBG in 2001, Isabel worked in emerging markets and Western Europe for WS Atkins in the UK as Senior Management Consultant; working on infrastructure finance in Thailand, Argentina, Barbados, Qatar, the UK, and Europe.
Isabel is a civil engineer by training, holds an MBA and a PhD from the University of Birmingham.
